It's easy to scratch and ding your stand up paddle board when you're transporting it, carrying it to the water, or simply paddling. SUP rail tape is the solution to keep your board in pristine condition for as long as possible. Once you decide that spending a few dollars on rail tape is the right thing to do, you have several options to choose from, including coloured, clear or frosty tape, and a variety of widths. Here are a few tips to help you decide which is right for you.
Coloured rail tape
This is the best option if you want to add a bit of colour to complement the colour of your board.
Clear rail tape
Clear rail tape is the best choice if you want the colours of your board to shine through.
Frosty
Frosty rail tape is semi-opaque, so you can still see the board through the tape. In addition, the frosty rail tape is anti-slip which comes in handy when you're surfing or on rough water.
Width
Choosing SUP rail tape with the right width will help you protect your board. The narrowest is 50mm but we recommend at least 65mm in most cases. This will cover as much of the rail as possible to protect it from damage, especially when surfing when paddles can hit the rails with a high level of force.
Thickness
Rail tape ranges in thickness from 0.3mm to 0.75mm. Choosing the best thickness will depend on how you use your SUP and your priorities. If you are concerned about adding weight to your board, a thick tape can add 400 to 500 grams to it. In this case, you will want to choose a thinner rail tape. At the same time, a thicker tape will provide more protection. In general, we recommend rail tape of 0.3mm to 0.4mm.
