While stand up paddleboarding can be fun and rewarding, choosing the right gear can make a big difference in your experience. Here we provide a few tips for selecting the right SUP gear for your needs.
Your board
This will depend on how you plan to use it. You can spend thousands of dollars on a high-end board. But if you want something for family use, an aluminium board will be an economical alternative. Touring boards are best for flat water, paddling in the open ocean, and 'downwinders' (going between two points with the wind at your back). Racing boards are designed for maximum speed but are less comfortable and stable. SUPs for surfing are usually shorter, have a narrower tail and nose, and are more curved. All-round boards are generally wide and thick, which provides more stability and is suitable for most people. Crossover boards are designed to be used for a bit of everything.
Your leash
You'll want to be sure that your leash is right for your needs if you are on flat water, racing or white water surfing. Make sure your leash is thick enough, especially if you will be surfing. At least 9mm is recommended. It's also a safety issue as losing your board can put you or others in danger.
Your paddle
A cheap alloy paddle is more likely to break, so metal or carbon will be a better choice. Paddles can be slippery, especially when you have suntan lotion on your hands. To overcome this problem, we've created a paddle grip the improves grip. This is particularly helpful when surfing. It includes a self-adhesive and can be tightened on the ends with electrical tape or silicon rings (included).
